I had lots of wetas at my house, most are now gone as my cat ate them.They are pretty docile.But they can bite.My cat had caught one and while in the process of eating it, it latched onto my cats lips with its big jaws.The cat squealed and it ran around in circles for about 30 seconds trying to claw it off.Very funny, but not so funny for the cat or weta.They are quite slow and easy to pick up, i have had one bite me when i accidently squashed it, it was painful and took a few flicks of the hand to get it off, and it left pinch marks but it did not pierce the skin.I believe some species can servive being frozen.
About 30 yrs ago, i spent some time in nz and travelled extensively for my work.I once checked into a motel late at night and, upon going to my room, found one of these fellows resting quietly on the headboard of my bed.Now, i don't like insects much so i hit him with about 1/2 of the contents of a can of fly spray.I used so much that he was covered in ice.I was about to pick him up and throw him outside when, to my horror, he woke up and started walking around.It seems that they thrive on pyrethrum and shrug off cold as well.I used the other half of the fly spray, got the frozen body into a bucket and threw it outside before it woke up.
